Choosing fleet tracking around your vehicles
Start with the decisions your team needs to make. A list of useful outcomes makes it easier to choose compatible hardware and agree a service scope.
Group vehicles by their requirements
Record make, model, year, quantity and usual operating locations. Include supply voltage or unusual operating conditions where known, and identify any existing trackers or service contracts.
A passenger car, a truck and an outdoor asset may need different mounting, power or enclosure choices. Ask for a recommendation for each group instead of treating a fleet as identical vehicles.
Name the information you will actually use
Separate basic location reporting from journey history, configured alerts and vehicle data. For each requirement, ask whether it depends on hardware, an accessory, vehicle support or service configuration.
CAN and OBD data availability must be checked for the exact vehicle and device. Confirm the operator, SIM and regional network support too; a broad “4G” label alone is not enough to validate every radio technology or deployment.
Agree access, rollout and handover
Identify who needs account access, who will maintain the vehicle list and who will respond to alerts. Confirm the account permissions, retention and support arrangements before activation.
Plan fitting around vehicle availability. At handover, check a recent report for each installed unit and record what has been enabled. The demonstration on this website uses sample data; use the quote and actual service handover to establish your agreed capabilities.
